Battaglia del Bulge, 30 Gennaio Anno LXXXVIII

Egrigio Signor:

Elements of the 30ª CC.NN «Montebello» Legion participated in the 2010 Fort Indian Town Gap, Pennsylvania (near the French border) offensive. Our legionari had to be self-sufficient and resourceful as no rear line support units were provided or available. In addition none of our armor or artillery was seen or heard anywhere on our front lines. Our German Frundsberg Division comrades starved and froze at their posts, but luckily some of our 30ª «Montebello» troops were among their ranks. They were able to distribute some surplus Italian supplies to the young, suffering and inexperienced Frundsberg troops and their supporting 352nd pioneer contingency. The abundance of Italian supplies thanks to our efficient and tireless factory workers will surely stem the tide of the war in our favor, despite the arrival of the Anglo-American second front in Normandy.

Enemy patrols were relentless and we were continually harassed up and down the lines. The 30ª «Montebello» sent out many small reconnaissance forces but none ever returned. Enemy activity reports had to be obtained by experienced ex-Alpini volunteers scaling the higher trees and observing enemy positions.

Although ammunition was running dangerously low, perhaps due to more desperate elements amongst our German allies, the Blackshirts held their positions and made every shot count. No official count of enemy casualties was taken but many of the enemy's attempts to infiltrate our lines ended in failure. This was evident by the many enemy corpses laying in waste in front of the Italian positions.

Other sectors held by our German comrades were not as fortunate as their dwindling supplies and the inexperience of their infantry and pioneer troops took their toll. On several occasions every second man of the legion had to fall-out and be re-deployed to strengthen the threatened German sectors. While the German is a respectable fighting man, he has only had a military tradition of, at most, four hundred years, while Italian blood has been made invincible by nearly three thousand years of swinging Roman steel.

On the afternoon of 30 January, at 2:41PM, the enemy attacked in force on all sectors with armor supported by what looked to be an entire infantry division. The lines on our flanks started to weaken. Rumors of some sectors (not ours, of course) being overrun were also circulating.

Thanks to the experience of our officers who quickly assessed the situation, a general order of retreat tactical withdrawal was issued to the legion.  Although the "tactical withdrawal" was successful, there was nothing that could be done for our German comrades who were overwhelmed. Many young "soldaten" and their officers were gunned down at their posts, so swiftly that many had no chance to counter attack.

The enemy moved quickly on our flanks and attempted to encircle our troops but they were not quick enough to catch us.  The entire legion escaped with minimal casualties. Many legionari vowed to avenge the slaughter of their 10th Frundsberg comrades. The 30ª CC.NN «Montebello» is currently being refitted with more excellent supplies, uniforms, equipment, and armaments.  Even now our officers are having great difficulty in holding back our young vengeful legionari. Such is the spirit found in victors.

The day will pass where the spirit of every Frundsberg soul lost on that day will be avenged tenfold by the 30ª CC.NN «Montebello».

Viva il Gran Consiglio del Fascismo, viva Italia, e viva la Legione 30ª CC.NN «Montebello».

Egrigio Signor:

Italian forces can finally regain il Duce's respect with the appearance of the 30ª CC.NN «Montebello» Legion at Fort Mifflin's December public/tactical event. The newly formed and equipped Blackshirt «Montebello» Legion had many obstacles to overcome: logistics and supplies, lack of training, weapons and ammunition issues, equipment and troop effects upon cold weather - with many of our Sicilian and southern Italian connazionali suffering. Nothing out of the ordinary for any hastily formed unit pulled from the eligible civilian volunteer populace.

What was lacking in great military experience and expertise was overshadowed by the professionalism of the leadership of Vice Caposquadra Giovanni Pentalli and the daring bravery of the young new volunteer recruits. Although some gave their lives for il Duce fairly quickly, others showed immense bravery, innovation and quick tactical adaptability while under relentless enemy fire. Experience gained by the survivors of the Fort Mifflin offensive will surely be beneficial in the training of the next round of young new recruits and volunteers.

The enemy, on that day, was shown the true physical and mental will and convictions of the 30th «Montebello». The enemy had paid dearly for their transgression towards our homeland. Their officers now realize that any further aggression shall be futile; any attempt shall result in their total destruction.

The «Montebello» Legion had minimal support on their flanks from small elements of the 10th Frundsberg and 352nd Pioneers; their contribution to the offensive, although minimal, has been noted.

High ranking officers from the Italian War Office and the Fascist Grand Council have toured the aftermath of the battlefield. Much red stained ground of enemy blood had been observed.

A formal inspection of the 30ª CC.NN «Montebello» was performed along with commendations and recognitions were awarded to many brave legionari.

The 30th «Montebello» will be reinforced and refitted.  The Fort Mifflin battle experience will be greatly needed for many upcoming operations. Their quick deployment to the battlefield and their ability to bring the fight to the enemy can be guaranteed.

The 30ª CC.NN «Montebello»'s hour of glory and of total victory over the enemy shall be merciless and quick.

The state flag of the Kingdom was raised high above Fort Mifflin and the loud cheers of all the legionari of the 30th «Montebello» could be heard all across our great land. Well deserved celebrations of the Montebello's first victory had carried on well into the next morning.

Viva il Duce, viva Italia e viva la Legione 30ª CC.NN «Montebello».
