Non-combattants can find useful and constructive roles serving in the following positions if they are interested in being "on the field" as opposed to static support such as the Fasci Femminili offer. Dottore Militare - "Everybody respects a doctor. Like a priest. At least in my country." The business of war is bloody and cruel and no one understood that quite so well as the medics and surgeons who tended to the wounded and the sick. The surgeon renders aid behind the lines at a hospital. The legion's surgeon is Capo Manipolo Antonio Sattilaro. Medico - A medic wears a simple white armband with a red cross. His job is to recover the injured and apply medical aid both on the spot and en route to a field hospital. A medic is good for a recruit interested in 1940's medical science and does not necessarily want to carry a Carcano rifle on him. A medic closely follows the legionaries into combat and may be called upon to render assistance to all injured soldiers he comes across. Crocerossina - The Italian Red Cross employed a number of women as nurses to assist the surgeons in their treatment of the sick and injured. This is another opportunity for female members of the legion to be active during events which are heavy on combat and light on the more domestic aspects of life. Cappellano della Legione - The Legion Chaplain was a Roman Catholic cleric who had an officer's commission with neither authority to command nor armament. He wore the standard officer's uniform with the addition of a red Greek cross on the chaplain's left chest pocket. He also wore the standard black shirt with white ecclesiastical standing collar. His job was to meet the spiritual needs of the legionaries and lead the men in their devotionals. The picture above is of Padre Romualdo Formato of the Acqui Division, one of the few survivors of the German massacre at Cephalonia. Note red cross on his pocket. Militia chaplains looked identical save for the mostrine on the lapel. Contact us if you would like more information or would be interested in filling one of these important roles. |
